About

WISE is seeking funds to support communities in Lembata and Adonara to recover from the impact of Cyclone Seroja.

Funds will be used to cover costs for:

  1. Response and recovery, and possible programmes after the emergency phase - including food, clean water, sanitation and hygiene tools like soap, toothpaste for people in evacuation centres

  2. WISE team members to visit Lembata if local partners require additional manpower.

  3. Medication and treatment for families with injuries.

Current situation

Tropical Cyclone Sejora caused heavy rains, strong winds, high sea waves and hydrometeorological disasters in 15 areas in East Nusa Tenggara. Areas including Sumba, Flores Island and Timor suffered floods and landslides, causing deaths, injuries, property damage, as well as impact to livelihoods.

As of 12 April 2021, the Indonesian National Disaster Management Authority (Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana, BNPB) (1) stated that about 509,604 people had been affected by the cyclone, with 181 deaths. 66,036 houses were damaged by the extreme weather (2).

Why Lembata?

As of 11 April 2020, 2,345 people in Lembata had been evacuated (Situation Report BNBP, 2021). Flooding in Lembata was exacerbated as the natural forest defences had been cut down to build a route to Ile Ape Volcano. (3)

There are relatively fewer organisations offering support in Lembata than other regions. Hence, WISE has partnered Simpa Sio Institute (4), who are responding in Lembata, to address outstanding needs.

Scope of financial support

We aim to raise USD 18,000 at this stage. Funds raised will be used to provide water, food, clothes, hygiene kits, and vitamins. An up-to-date budget can be found here. The budget will be continuously updated based on need.

WISE will be working with Simpa Sio Institute, a local volunteer organisation to distribute the items. WISE & Simpasio will coordinate with BNPB and other organisations to avoid duplication of efforts,

Accountability

WISE intends to put the following measures in place to ensure that the funds are being used appropriately:

  • As far as possible, we will liaise with communities, humanitarian organisations and government agencies directly on needs.
  • We will be transparent to the residents, the local government and to the donors on the amount of funds raised, and the amount of funds disbursed, as well as to whom and for what purpose.
